Falwell denied his involvement but admitted his wife’s affair. He sued Liberty for defamation, accusing the school of tarnishing his reputation. Liberty countersued, claiming Falwell concealed information about scandals during contract negotiations.
Settlement Details
The settlement covers Falwell’s retirement and severance pay. It also includes terms for using Jerry Falwell, Sr.’s likeness. Liberty praised Falwell’s contributions, emphasizing a commitment to forgiveness and reconciliation. Liberty President Dondi Costin welcomed the Falwells back to campus and lifted communication restrictions between Falwell and Liberty employees.
Liberty said that its settlement with Falwell “is based on a mutual understanding regarding the amount Liberty University will pay its former president in authorized retirement and severance under the various disputed agreements.”
Criticism and Controversy
Attorney Boz Tchividjian criticized Costin’s comments, citing alleged misconduct involving Liberty students and the Falwells. Tchividjian condemned Liberty’s actions as a “toxic response” and un-Christian.
