Frenzied speculation over Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’s vice presidential pick ended Tuesday, August 6, with Harris reportedly choosing Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate.
Walz’s profile has risen since President Joe Biden announced his decision not to seek re-election. Regular national TV appearances, his “MAGA is weird” slogan, and advocacy for liberal policies have garnered him fans. Known as a “Midwestern Dad” and “Minnesota Lutheran Dad,” Walz embraces his faith.
Pew Research Center reports over 20% of Minnesotans are Lutheran. Walz, Minnesota’s governor since January 2019, often attends Pilgrim Lutheran Church in St. Paul. If elected, Walz would be the second Lutheran vice president.
During COVID-19, he imposed worship restrictions, later easing them after backlash. Amid George Floyd protests, Walz collaborated with faith leaders for nonviolent solutions. Minnesota, home to a significant Muslim population, has seen Walz engage in various interfaith events. Walz’s potential presidency would mark the first Lutheran in office.
