The struggle for survival: Gaza Christians hold fast

Fadi, a Gazan Christian, navigates life under the constant shadow of surveillance drones and shelling. Once a resident of a now-destroyed apartment, he endures long walks to work due to exorbitant fuel prices. The streets remain perilous, with robberies adding to the ever-present fear of missile strikes. Like many others, Fadi laments the loss of a stable life and his dreams of a brighter future.

Churches as Refuge and Resilience

As the war continues, Gaza’s Christian populationโ€”now fewer than 700โ€”seeks shelter in the Holy Family Catholic Church and the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Porphyrius. These sanctuaries not only provide physical refuge but also symbolize resilience. Fadi explains that the communityโ€™s presence protects the churches from potential break-ins or military attacks. Despite international laws against targeting religious sites, damages to Holy Family and other places of worship persist.

Scarcity of Resources in the Zeitoun Neighborhood

The displaced face severe resource shortages. Holy Family offers two hot meals weekly, leaving residents reliant on canned goods for survival. Essential commodities like meat and coffee are prohibitively expensive. Vegetables and fruit were luxuries until a rare delivery provided a brief moment of joy. The church’s efforts to improve living conditions include acquiring washing machines and installing solar panels, yet challenges like overcrowded facilities and limited medical supplies remain.

Christian Exodus and Losses

The war has decimated Gazaโ€™s Christian community, with a 30% reduction in numbers since October 2023. Some fled through Egypt at steep costs until border closures made escape impossible. Many of those who remain have adapted to a spartan lifestyle, finding solace in daily prayers and a shared determination to protect their sacred spaces.

Hopes Amid Despair

Despite the hardships, Fadi and his community draw strength from small victories, like access to fresh produce or moments of unity during mass. Their resilience underscores a steadfast hope for peace despite relentless adversity.
