Power, Deception, and Faith: The rise of the modern Antichrist spirit

L. Ann Jervis, a retired New Testament professor and Anglican priest, notes that the term “antichrist” appears only in 1 John and 2 John. While rarely used, it represents a broader biblical theme opposing God’s kingdom. The Hebrew Bible describes this opposition with the image of a monstrous sea serpent (tannin), symbolizing political rulers and cosmic chaos. Biblical figures like Pharaoh and Nebuchadnezzar are linked to this image, reinforcing that earthly powers can stand against God’s will.

The most striking depiction of this struggle appears in Daniel 7, where a beast rises against God’s rule, foreshadowing later biblical visions of apocalyptic evil. In Revelation, the Antichrist figure leads the world into chaos, deceiving even the faithful. This concept has long fueled theological discussions about the dangers of unchecked power.

Technology and Global Politics: Echoes of Prophecy?

Evangelical theologian John Stott warned about the growing dangers of technological control and authoritarianism. The modern landscape has validated his concerns, from China and Russia to the United States. With advancements such as Elon Musk’s Neuralink implanting the first human brain chip and his vision of an “everything app,” some Christians see alarming parallels with biblical warnings. Critics argue that technology’s fusion with economic and political power may enable unprecedented control over human lives.

Trump’s influence in evangelical circles has also drawn scrutiny. While some see him as a defender of Christian values, others argue that his cult-like following mirrors the deceptive power of the Antichrist. His alliances with figures like Musk and his rhetoric and actions raise concerns about misplaced loyalty among believers.

Evangelicals and Political Allegiances

Despite past claims by evangelical leaders that figures like Barack Obama were paving the way for the Antichrist, many now support Trump without question. Some see irony in this shift, especially given Trump’s resilience in the face of scandals, legal troubles, and even an assassination attempt—events that some believe resemble the Beast’s supposed resurrection in Revelation 13.

Critics point to instances of idolatry, such as evangelical influencer Eric Metaxas referring to Trump in messianic terms. Others note the growing intolerance toward dissent, questioning whether evangelicals are aligning themselves with Christ or a dangerous political movement.

Persecution, Power, and the War on the Saints

Revelation 13 warns that the Beast will make war on the saints. While Trump has not directly persecuted Christians, some argue his policies harm marginalized groups. Musk, too, has criticized religious charities for assisting migrants, which some see as an attack on Christian compassion. Additionally, proposed policies like ICE raids on churches and the dismantling of humanitarian aid programs have raised ethical and theological concerns.

Despite Trump’s rhetoric defending Christianity, skeptics warn that authoritarian figures often manipulate faith for political gain. The question remains: Is the modern evangelical movement following Christ’s teachings, or has it been deceived by worldly power?

A Call for Discernment

The Antichrist concept warns of the dangers of unchecked power and deception. Whether Trump and Musk embody this role or simply operate in its spirit, their rise has sparked debate among Christians. Evangelicals must examine whether their allegiance lies with Jesus or a political ideology that may oppose his teachings. In an era of growing authoritarianism, biblical discernment is more crucial than ever.
