Post-Hillsong: Brian Houston’s new church venture faces financial challenges

Brian Houston, the former leader of Hillsong Church, and his wife, Bobbie, are seeking financial support for their new online ministry, Jesus Followers TV. Launched in late July, this platform is envisioned as an online global church offering hope and inspiration. Despite his 2022 resignation from Hillsong following scandals and an ongoing government investigation into financial misconduct, Houston remains determined to rebuild his ministry.

Houston’s New Venture: Jesus Followers TV

Brian Houston described the launch of Jesus Followers TV as a long-held dream. He emphasized the ministry’s global reach and the need for financial contributions to establish a television studio. However, Houston glossed over past controversies, merely referring to them as “mistakes.” Despite launching the platform, viewership has been modest, far from the global influence the Houstons once wielded.

“Frankly, we’re starting with nothing and we’ve got desperate needs,” he added. “We’re believing God for a studio, and that comes with the need for not only television cameras but production crew. … There’s television lights needed and LED screens and so many things.”

In late 2022, the Houstons reportedly sold their home in Sydney’s Hills District for $4.5 million along with two long-held luxurious apartments on Australia’s popular Bondi Beach.

Lingering Questions and Concerns

The rapid reemergence of the Houstons in ministry has raised concerns among Christians and religious leaders. Critics point to the lack of accountability and the haste with which the couple returned to public ministry. The Houstons’ financial needs, despite their recent property sales, have also drawn scrutiny.
