Pastor claims divine right to discipline as assault case unfolds

Pastor Claims Divine Authority to Discipline Children

Gabriel Hardy, a pastor at the Army of the Lord — Ministry of Defense Church in Vancouver, Washington, faces third-degree child assault charges. According to Clark County authorities, Hardy allegedly whipped a 6-year-old child with a belt, leaving bruises and welts. Hardy reportedly told police he was “divinely ordained to chastise children.”

Incident Occurred During Church Service

The incident happened on February 16 during a Sunday service at Hardy’s home-based church in the Hazel Dell area. A woman who attends the church had asked a friend to bring her child to the service since she could not attend. She also requested the friend to speak with Hardy about her child’s recent behavioral issues. However, when the child returned home, the mother discovered signs of physical punishment. The child claimed Hardy had whipped him about 12 times.

Investigation Uncovers Preaching on Corporal Punishment

After learning of the injuries, Clark County’s Special Victims Unit launched an investigation. Multiple witnesses confirmed Hardy frequently preached about the necessity of corporal punishment. Authorities say Hardy openly advocated for disciplining young children and admitted to whipping the child as an act of correction.

Police Raid Pastor’s Home and Find Evidence

On February 20, police executed a search warrant at Hardy’s residence. Though Hardy was not home at the time, investigators reportedly found evidence supporting the assault claims. Later that day, officers arrested Hardy, who allegedly confessed to whipping the child. He was booked into Clark County Jail but released on a $10,000 bond on February 26.

Hardy Confident He Will Be Cleared

Hardy’s next court appearance is scheduled for March 5. An anonymous source told local news outlet KMTR that Hardy expressed confidence in his innocence after his release. The case has sparked debate, with some supporters defending Hardy’s right to discipline while others condemn his actions as child abuse.
