Netflix’s American Primeval under fire for Mountain Meadows Massacre depiction

LDS Church Condemns Netflix Series as “Dangerously Misleading”

Netflix’s new historical fiction series, American Primeval, is facing backlash for portraying the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) and its leader, Brigham Young. The church issued a statement on Friday, criticizing the series for misrepresenting its history and reinforcing harmful stereotypes.

According to the church, American Primeval presents a “fictionalized interpretation” of events in 19th-century Utah but does so in a way that is “egregiously misleading.” The statement specifically calls Young’s portrayal inaccurate, depicting him as a “villainous, violent fanatic” rather than a “revered prophet and courageous pioneer.”

American Primeval and Its Controversial Storyline

Created by Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights) and written by Mark L. Smith, the series follows a mother and son escaping their past while navigating the dangers of the American West. The narrative includes clashes between Indigenous nations, the U.S. government, westward-moving pioneers, and the powerful LDS Church.

One of the most controversial elements is the show’s depiction of the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre. The event, which took place during the Utah War, involved members of the LDS territorial militia killing 120 emigrants traveling west. The LDS Church has long acknowledged the massacre as a “horrific tragedy” and has taken steps to uncover and share the whole truth. However, the church argues that American Primeval inaccurately portrays the event as representing the entire faith.

Critics and Supporters Weigh In

Critics of the series, including the LDS Church, warn that its “graphic and sensationalized storytelling” distorts reality and could foster animosity. The church expressed concern that such depictions “hinder genuine understanding” and may contribute to negative perceptions or even violence.

On the other hand, some viewers and critics argue that historical fiction often takes creative liberties and that the series provides a raw, unfiltered look at the brutality of the American frontier. USA TODAY critic Kelly Lawler described the show as “savage and primal and bloody and cold and ruthless,” emphasizing its unflinching portrayal of historical conflicts.

Awaiting Netflix’s Response

Neither Netflix nor Peter Berg’s production company has responded to the controversy. With American Primeval already sparking heated debate, its impact on public perception of history and religious communities remains to be seen.
