Concerns Over Shapiro’s Handling of Sexual Assault Claims
A women’s advocacy group, the National Women’s Defense League (NWDL), has urged Vice President Kamala Harris not to select Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro as her vice-presidential running mate. NWDL expressed concerns over Shapiro’s handling of sexual harassment allegations within his office.
NWDL’s Call for Accountability
The NWDL, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to preventing sexual harassment and protecting survivors, released a statement criticizing Shapiro’s response to sexual harassment claims involving his Cabinet Secretary, Mike Vereb. They urged Harris and the Democratic Party to consider Shapiro’s past handling of such complaints when selecting a vice-presidential candidate.
Specific Allegations Against Shapiro’s Administration
The NWDL highlighted that Vereb, who resigned in September 2023, was accused of making inappropriate comments to a former staffer. A subsequent settlement of $295,000 was reached, which included mandatory sexual harassment training for staff. The NWDL believes Shapiro’s office should have done more to protect and support survivors and prevent further incidents.
Broader Implications for the Harris Campaign
Beyond the sexual harassment issue, Shapiro’s stance on Israel has also drawn criticism. Filmmaker Michael Moore warned that Shapiro’s support for Israel and opposition to the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement could alienate Arab American voters, particularly in swing states like Michigan.
Political Ramifications
Shapiro, governor of the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania, is considered a strong contender for Harris’s running mate. However, the controversy surrounding his office’s handling of harassment claims and his political positions may impact his chances and the overall support for the Harris campaign.
