Justice and peace in Ukraine: Why the war must end rightly

Ukrainians Seek More Than Just Peace

The people of Ukraine desperately long for peace, but not at the cost of justice and security. Their nation was unjustly invaded, their cities bombed, and their lives shattered. For Ukrainians, an end to the war must also mean accountability for those responsible and safeguards to prevent future aggression. Simply halting the conflict without addressing these issues is not a true resolution.

The Need for Repentance and Accountability

A growing narrative suggests that Ukraine provoked Russia or could have prevented the war. This claim ignores history. Ukraine declared independence in 1991 and, in 1994, relinquished its nuclear arsenal for the sake of peace. Yet Russia has repeatedly violated Ukraine’s sovereignty, from the 2014 annexation of Crimea to the full-scale invasion in 2022. Without accountability, aggressors will continue unchecked, and true peace will remain elusive.

Global Consequences of Injustice

Martin Luther King Jr. warned, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Like other global conflicts, the war in Ukraine affects the entire world. In today’s interconnected society, war and oppression abroad have real consequences for people everywhere. Allowing Russia’s aggression to go unpunished could embolden other oppressive regimes, threatening global stability and security.

A Christian Call to Defend Life

Evangelical Christians strongly defend the sanctity of life, often in opposition to abortion. That same commitment must extend to protecting innocent lives from war and destruction. Ukraine faces repeated tragedies, like the bombing of a Kharkiv apartment building in 2024. These horrors echo past events like 9/11, reminding the world of the human cost of unchecked violence.

Faith, Action, and Rebuilding

Psalm 20:7 declares, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” Ukrainians continue to pray and persevere through faith. However, prayer alone is not enough. Like Nehemiah rebuilding Jerusalem, action must accompany faith. With USAID funding suspended, grassroots efforts like The Renewal Initiative are vital in providing relief and long-term rebuilding.

The Responsibility to Stand with Ukraine

The world must not turn away from Ukraine’s suffering. Supporting Ukraine now is a matter of justice, faith, and moral responsibility. Even after the war ends, the road to healing will take years. As Jesus taught, true discipleship is demonstrated through love in action (John 13:35).
