A Shift in Perspective on Secularization
In Cross Purposes: Christianity’s Broken Bargain with Democracy, Jonathan Rauch revisits his earlier views on secularization with concern. Once confident in the decline of religion’s influence, Rauch now believes Christianity plays a crucial civic role. He links the erosion of Christian influence with increasing social instability, claiming that as American Christianity weakens, so do key democratic institutions.
The Argument for Christianity as Civic Bedrock
Rauch, a self-described atheist and liberal, argues that Christianity functions as a “load-bearing wall” for American democracy. Without its moral framework, he contends, society risks descending into polarization and chaos. He criticizes both the left and right for importing religious fervor into politics, making public life more divisive and less stable. Rauch warns that Christianity must avoid becoming too culturally diluted or too politically combative.
Liberalism, Not Progressivism, as Democracy’s Anchor
While the book’s title mentions democracy, Rauch’s true defense is of liberalism—defined not by partisan politics but by foundational principles like freedom, equality, and the rule of law. He rebukes post-liberal thinkers who blame liberalism for undermining moral institutions. Instead, he asserts liberalism created a space for such institutions to thrive without coercion.
Appeals to Christians—and Missed Opportunities
Rauch praises Christianity’s social contributions and engages with it respectfully, shaped by friendships with believers. However, his evangelicalism critique may alienate the audience he hopes to persuade. He relies on voices like Russell Moore, who already resonate with politically moderate evangelicals, but fails to effectively engage more hardened partisan readers.
Latter-day Saints as a Civic Model—But a Risky Comparison
Rauch upholds Latter-day Saints as a political example for evangelicals, highlighting their civic engagement and policy wins. Yet this comparison falters. Most evangelicals reject LDS theology outright, making it difficult to draw meaningful inspiration from their practices. Rauch’s call to imitate LDS behavior without endorsing their beliefs overlooks theological realities that can’t be easily sidestepped.
