Hal Lindsey, author of ‘The Late Great Planet Earth,’ dies at 95

Hal Lindsey, the influential evangelical author renowned for his apocalyptic writings, passed away on November 25, 2024, at his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, just two days after celebrating his 95th birthday.

Born on November 23, 1929, in Houston, Texas, Lindsey served in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean War. Following a transformative spiritual experience, he pursued theological studies, earning a Master of Theology degree from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1962, with a focus on the New Testament and early Greek literature.

In 1970, Lindsey authored “The Late Great Planet Earth,” a groundbreaking work that interpreted contemporary events through the lens of biblical prophecy. The book became a bestseller, selling over 35 million copies by the end of the century, and was later adapted into a film narrated by Orson Welles.

This publication played a pivotal role in popularizing dispensationalist premillennialism, bringing concepts like the Rapture and the Antichrist into mainstream discourse.

Throughout his career, Lindsey continued to explore eschatological themes in works such as “Satan Is Alive and Well on Planet Earth” and “There’s a New World Coming.” He also ventured into television, hosting programs like “International Intelligence Briefing” and “The Hal Lindsey Report,” where he analyzed current events in relation to biblical prophecy.

Lindsey’s teachings significantly influenced evangelical thought, especially concerning end-times theology. His interpretations offered a framework for understanding global events within a prophetic context, resonating with a generation seeking answers during tumultuous times.

He is survived by his wife, JoLyn, and three daughters from his second marriage. Lindsey’s enduring legacy lies in his profound impact on Christian eschatology and his ability to engage the public’s imagination regarding biblical prophecy and contemporary events.
