Authorities have identified Matthew Livelsberger, an active-duty Green Beret, as the individual killed in a Tesla Cybertruck explosion near President-elect Donald Trump’s Las Vegas hotel. Livelsberger, an Army special forces veteran since 2006, was on approved leave at the time of the incident. The Army confirmed his service at Fort Bragg, now Fort Liberty, a base known for housing the Army’s Special Forces Command.
FBI Investigates Connection to Colorado Springs
The FBI confirmed conducting law enforcement activity at a home in Colorado Springs in connection to the explosion but provided no additional details. The Cybertruck, rented through the Turo app, was packed with firework mortars and camp fuel canisters. Tesla’s CEO clarified on X (formerly Twitter) that vehicle telemetry showed no faults, emphasizing that the explosion was unrelated to Tesla’s design.
New Orleans Terror Attack Fuels Speculation
Hours before the Las Vegas explosion, Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, a U.S. Army veteran, rammed a truck into a New Orleans crowd, killing 15 people before being shot by police. Jabbar and Livelsberger had ties to Fort Bragg, but officials say their assignments did not overlap. While the New Orleans incident is being investigated as a terrorist attack, authorities have found no evidence connecting the two events or suggesting collaboration.
Nearby Injuries and Ongoing Investigations
The Las Vegas explosion caused minor injuries to seven bystanders but left investigators questioning the motive. Law enforcement has identified the individual who rented the truck but has yet to release further information. The lack of apparent connections between the incidents leaves investigators cautious but determined to uncover possible links.
Concerns of Supporters and Detractors
Supporters of Tesla argue that the explosion highlights external threats rather than vehicle safety. Critics, however, question whether the company’s technology could have mitigated the blast. Army officials and lawmakers also press for greater scrutiny of potential security lapses involving service members.
