However, Hillary Clinton’s failure to connect with these voters in 2016 resulted in a stark contrast, as Donald Trump secured over 80% of their support. For Kamala Harris to succeed in the upcoming election, breaking this stronghold is crucial.

The Carrot and Stick Approach

Democratic evangelical groups are employing both positive and negative strategies to attract religious conservatives. The “carrot” approach emphasizes that Democratic policies align with Christian values, aiming to appeal to voters’ religious identities. Leaders like Doug Pagitt, co-founder and executive director of Vote Common Good, and Tim Whitaker, creator and facilitator of the New Evangelicals, advocate for a focus on the common good and non-dehumanization, presenting Harris as a candidate who embodies these values.

On the other hand, the “stick” strategy highlights the dangers of a second Trump term, questioning his representation of Christianity. Evangelicals for Harris have produced ads portraying Trump as a “false prophet” and highlighting his dehumanizing characterizations of fellow Americans, urging voters to choose a more Christ-like path.

Challenges and Republican Response

The Republican camp is not ignoring these efforts. Figures like Megan Basham have criticized Harris’ platform as opposed to “biblical ethics,” accusing Democrats of trying to manipulate Christianity for political gain. Despite this pushback, progressive faith leaders remain hopeful, seeing the potential for faith to serve as a unifying force rather than a divisive one.
