In response to a new report indicating that one-third of UK Catholics have reduced or stopped attending Mass due to the child sexual abuse crisis within the Church, a leading bishop has committed to significant reforms. The study, led by Durham University’s Centre for Catholic Studies, sheds light on the profound impact of the scandal on Catholic Mass attendance and community trust.
Bishop Paul Mason Pledges Safety and Accountability
Bishop Paul Mason, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales’ lead on safeguarding, acknowledged the Church’s past failings and vowed to make it a place of “safety and sanctuary for all.” Emphasizing the importance of safeguarding as part of his role, Mason apologized for past mistakes and committed to listening to abuse survivors. He stated that ongoing efforts would focus on improving safety within Church environments.
Survey Shows Catholic Community’s Demand for Change
The Durham University study, based on a YouGov survey of over 3,000 Catholics, found that 79% of respondents believe the Church must change significantly to prevent further abuse. The survey captured the views of regular, occasional, and non-attending Catholics, highlighting widespread concerns about Church accountability and moral authority. A staggering 77% of Catholics feel that the Church’s moral standing has been compromised due to the abuse scandal.
Positive Signs: Support for the Day of Prayer
The report also found a strong endorsement for the annual Day of Prayer for Victims and Survivors of Abuse, particularly among younger Catholics. This day, encouraged by Pope Francis, is seen by many as a positive and hopeful step. The report suggests that the day’s observance could open pathways for dialogue, healing, and progress within the Church.
Through his response, Bishop Mason expressed openness to learning from the report’s findings and incorporating them into future safeguarding measures, striving to restore trust and integrity in the Church.
