Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, returned to Washington nearly 44 years after leaving office, receiving bipartisan accolades during state funeral rites. Carter, who passed away on December 29 at 100, was honored in the Capitol Rotunda on Tuesday in a ceremony attended by Vice President Kamala Harris, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune. Harris highlighted Carter’s humility, faith, and public service, while Thune celebrated his post-presidential legacy, including his work with Habitat for Humanity.
Ceremonial Traditions with Personal Symbolism
The state funeral began with Carter’s remains departing the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta. Accompanied by hymns like Amazing Grace and Blessed Assurance, his casket was transported to the U.S. Navy Memorial before being carried on a horse-drawn caisson to the Capitol. As the only U.S. Naval Academy graduate to become president, Carter’s journey echoed his 1977 inaugural parade, during which he famously walked Pennsylvania Avenue.
Legacy Honored in the Capitol Rotunda
Congressional leaders, cabinet members, and Supreme Court justices gathered in the Capitol Rotunda to pay their respects. The U.S. Naval Academy Glee Club performed patriotic hymns, and Vice President Harris and others placed wreaths by the casket. The catafalque, which once held Abraham Lincoln’s casket, served as the platform for Carter’s. Mourners included Carter’s grandchildren, some visibly moved during the ceremony.
A President Who Defied Traditions
Carter’s preference for modesty over pomp stood in contrast to the ceremonial splendor of his state funeral. Known for his straightforward style, Carter eschewed many of Washington’s traditions during his presidency, such as limiting the use of Hail to the Chief. His remains now rest in a simple wooden casket, symbolizing the humility he maintained throughout his life.
Looking Ahead to Final Farewell
Carter will lie in state until Wednesday before his remains are transferred to the National Cathedral for a state funeral. President Joe Biden will deliver a eulogy honoring a man whose humility and service left an indelible mark on the nation.
