A deep dive into small-group discipleship in modern churches

In the late 1700s, Robert Raikes witnessed children in Gloucester, England, engaging in troubling behavior, prompting him to establish the first Sunday School in 1780. His mission was to help children learn to read and grow spiritually, especially on Sundays when they were free from factory work. Two hundred fifty years later, while much has changed, the idea of small-group discipleship remains a core aspect of many churches’ ministries.

Modern Group Structures in U.S. Churches

A Lifeway Research study reveals that 56% of U.S. Protestant churches with ongoing adult Bible study groups still use the term “Sunday School.” However, terms such as “adult Bible studies” (72%) and “small groups” (39%) have gained popularity. Churches often prioritize the study of Scripture, with 46% of group leaders stating it as the primary focus, followed by disciple-making, worship, and fellowship.

Engagement and Group Dynamics

Churches typically host seven ongoing adult Bible study groups, with 44% of worship attendees participating. Involvement in Bible study correlates with worship attendance growth. Nearly all groups meet weekly, and most gather at church, with a smaller percentage meeting in homes or other off-campus locations. While groups meet regularly throughout the year, participation trends show that individuals often stay with the same group for years, creating stable communities.

In conclusion, while the labels and formats may have evolved, the core principles of Raikes’ Sunday School model—learning, relationships, and spiritual growth—remain central to group ministry in modern churches.
