Ann Brock of the blog Old Black Church writes that a Black family was driven off from attending the First Baptist Church in the majority African-American town of Forrest City, Ark., following racist remarks from white churchgoers.
Despite an initial invite to the church, Donna Mac quickly felt unwelcomed as her family was denied entry and referred to as โcoloredsโ by several older, white members of the church. Mac and her family left without attending Sunday services.
Brock continues:
“Iโve never in my 34 years of living witnessed a church turn someone around because of the color of their skin. Walking up we were met on the steps by the 1st member (an older white guy) who stated: โWell what do you want to come in for?โ We responded, โChurch.โ He stated, โChurch doesnโt start until 11am. โ (Mine you other members are entering the church at this time.) After speaking with the 2nd member (an older white lady) I stated, โIs everyone not welcome here?โ She stated, โWeโve had COLOREDS here before.โ I asked, โWhat do you mean Coloreds? Do you mean Black people?โ Her response, โNo COLOREDS! When I was growing up we always called them COLOREDS!โ We just looked at her and left!”
My feelings are so hurt!
