Conservative activist Christopher Rufo played a key role in this shift by weaponizing the term “Critical Race Theory” (CRT) to attack public institutions. By linking CRT to federal agencies, Rufo helped create broad opposition to government programs. However, critics note that CRT is a niche academic field with little influence over federal policy. Unlike CRT, DEI programs are widespread, making them a more effective target for political attacks.
The Potential Consequences of the Anti-DEI Push
The Trump administration’s crackdown on DEI could significantly reshape the federal government. Critics warn that this effort is not just about rolling back DEI policies but a broader attempt to dismantle the administrative state itself. The administration risks undermining key health, science, and education programs by attacking federal agencies under the guise of fighting ideological bias. Supporters, however, view this as a necessary correction to what they see as government overreach and ideological enforcement.
