School vouchers divide Ohio over funding and faith

The Center for Christian Virtue and Its Growing Influence

In May, the Center for Christian Virtue (CCV), an advocacy group, hosted a “Prayer at the Statehouse” event in Ohio, symbolizing its rising political clout. With headquarters across from the Ohio Capitol, the group has successfully pushed for one of the nation’s largest expansions of private school vouchers. Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted credited faith and prayer for legislative victories, including advancing school choice and further cementing the CCV’s role in shaping state policy.

Ohio’s Path to Universal Vouchers

Initially designed to help low-income students escape failing schools, Ohio’s voucher program has been transformed into a universal initiative. By 2023, all families, regardless of income, became eligible for public funds to pay private school tuition. Critics argue this benefits wealthier families and religious institutions, with nearly $1 billion in taxpayer money now funding private education, primarily Catholic and evangelical schools.

Supporters Highlight Choice, Critics Warn of Public School Harm

Proponents see vouchers as empowering parents and enhancing education access. Matt Huffman, a key advocate, defends the idea that families should direct tax dollars to schools of their choice. However, critics, including public school officials, warn of deep consequences: declining public school enrollment, financial strain, and increased segregation. Some private schools have raised tuition, exploiting the new funding, while rural districts with few private schools see little benefit.

Nationwide Momentum and Concerns

Ohio’s program mirrors a broader push for universal vouchers in states like Florida and Arizona, often supported by conservative groups and billionaires. Critics highlight rising costs, misuse of funds, and fears of undermining public education. Arizona’s program, for instance, faces budget shortfalls due to unexpected voucher expenses. In Ohio, a lawsuit argues vouchers violate constitutional principles and exacerbate racial disparities.

Future Battles Over Education Funding

Despite opposition, voucher advocates like the CCV and Huffman aim to expand programs further, including funding new private schools in rural areas. The CCV’s influence continues to grow, fueled by public funds and alliances with conservative organizations, making Ohio a key battleground for the school choice movement.
