Historic Installation at Sixteenth Street Baptist Church
Rev. Boise Kimber was officially installed as president of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. (NBCUSA) during the denomination’s midwinter board meeting in Birmingham, Alabama. The ceremony took place at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, a historically significant site where four young girls lost their lives in a Ku Klux Klan bombing 60 years ago. Kimber, 65, chose this location to symbolize his vision for progress and healing within the predominantly Black denomination. Attended by over 2,000 members and guests, the event was followed by a sold-out inauguration ball.
Vision for Inclusion of Women and Young Leaders
Kimber’s presidency emphasizes inclusivity, Christian education, and leadership opportunities for women and younger clergy. He has pledged to address the lack of women in top leadership roles, stating, “We’re making progress, and we will continue to work toward that goal.” His administration includes appointments of women and millennials to key positions. Supporters, including Rev. Christopher Davis, noted the intentional efforts to create opportunities for younger leaders to transition into future roles. However, detractors like Rev. Alvin Love expressed concerns that progress on gender inclusion remains slower than expected.
Controversial Election and Leadership Goals
Kimber’s election in September faced criticism over the voting process, though he won with 69% support. While some opposed the process, Kimber’s leadership goals have received broad approval. His agenda includes restoring NBCUSA headquarters in Nashville, bolstering Christian education, and fostering relationships with corporate and political leaders to promote diversity and inclusion. He announced an economic development committee led by businessman Willie Wilson to advocate for Black representation in major corporations.
Social Justice and Recovery Efforts
Kimber also highlighted NBCUSA’s social justice initiatives, including a partnership with the Gamaliel National Network and disaster relief efforts in wildfire-stricken California. These moves align with his focus on “living one’s faith through action.” As the denomination continues recovering from membership losses during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kimber remains optimistic about growth, pointing to the strong turnout at the board meeting as a sign of renewed energy within NBCUSA.
