Violence against Christians in Mexico: Priests and Evangelicals targeted

Christian communities in Mexico are facing unprecedented levels of violence, a new report reveals. Religious leaders and believers alike are grappling with threats, extortion, and targeted killings, as documented by the Catholic Multimedia Centre (CCM).

Clergy Killings and Church Attacks

Between 2018 and 2024, nearly 900 Catholic ministry members were extorted or threatened, according to the report. During the same period, 26 religious buildings were attacked, highlighting the dangerous environment for worship. Under former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, 10 Catholic priests and one seminary student were killed. A priest has also been murdered since Claudia Sheinbaum assumed the presidency in October 2024.

Systemic Failures Drive Continued Threats

The CCM report blames systemic issues, such as corruption and impunity, for the ongoing violence. Many victims fear retaliation and decline to report attacks, further entrenching the problem. The report describes the situation as destabilizing local economies and social structures, with organized crime playing a major role.

Calls for Solidarity and Action

Anna Lee Stangl, Christian Solidarity Worldwide’s Director of Advocacy, highlighted the long-standing trend of violence against clergy. She called on international organizations and the Mexican government to address root causes, including the trafficking of drugs, weapons, and people. Stangl also urged solidarity with affected communities to combat what she described as a crisis of governance and justice.

Broader Religious Persecution in Mexico

The report also sheds light on violence against evangelicals. Earlier this year, over 150 Protestant Christians in Hidalgo were displaced and coerced into signing agreements restricting their religious freedoms. Advocates argue such actions violate Mexican law and human rights norms.

A Targeted Assassination

The October killing of Fr. Marcelo Pérez Pérez, a priest known for his human rights advocacy, underscores the growing dangers for religious leaders who challenge criminal or political powers.
