The Institute on Religion & Democracy (IRD) has taken over Good News, a theologically conservative magazine influential in United Methodist Church (UMC) politics. Initially set to close after nearly six decades, the publication relaunched on January 1, 2025, under the John Wesley Institute (JWI).
Expanded Vision for the Magazine
While Good News previously focused primarily on UMC matters, JWI plans to broaden its scope to serve the entire pan-Wesleyan community. IRD President Mark Tooley confirmed that the Good News board unanimously approved the transition in October, allowing the magazine to continue its work with renewed energy.
Leadership and Operational Changes
Steve Beard, who has been editor since 1991, will remain in his position but will work remotely from California. The physical office near Houston is set to close. Ryan Danker, Director of JWI, described the relaunch as an opportunity to focus on Christian formation and catechesis. He noted plans for new teaching materials, conferences, and videos to support church leaders and lay members.
Supporters Celebrate, Critics Raise Questions
Supporters view this development as a lifeline for a trusted theological resource. They praise JWI’s commitment to maintaining the magazine’s legacy while broadening its impact. However, some detractors question whether the magazine’s shift away from UMC-specific issues could dilute its influence or alienate its core audience.
Commitment to Faithful Foundations
Danker expressed optimism for the magazine’s future, emphasizing its alignment with JWI’s mission to share the teachings of Jesus Christ. He stated, “Good News will remain a vital resource for Wesleyan Christians across denominations, promoting the wholeness promised in the Gospel.”
