Massachusetts church provides warmth for the unhoused during winter

The church’s 100-year-old building has served various congregations in a historic district. Affiliated with the Assemblies of God since 2015, Christ the Rock offers services in both English and Portuguese. Under the leadership of Pastor Rob Canavan, who assumed the lead pastor role in 2022, the church has emphasized outreach initiatives to demonstrate genuine care for the community.

Collaboration with Local Authorities

Recognizing the rising homelessness rates exceeding local shelter capacities, Pastor Canavan reached out to Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan to offer the church as a winter warming center and summer cooling center. Initially serving as a check-in and feeding site with referrals for overnight stays, the church expanded its services during a sub-zero weekend by partnering with two other churches. This collaboration provided continuous shelter for the homeless, with each church covering eight-hour shifts. Mayor Coogan praised the churches for their cooperative efforts.

Ongoing Community Engagement

Beyond temperature-related services, Christ the Rock Church actively participates in various community support programs. These include staffing overnight facilities, providing meals, distributing monthly “blessing bags” for the homeless, operating a food pantry, and offering generously stocked Thanksgiving baskets for families. The church’s commitment to its mission statement, “Love God, love people, change the world,” has been recognized by city officials and the local community.

Support and Recognition

In the fall of 2024, the church building suffered substantial water damage. In response, the Fall River City Council considered allocating funds to assist with repairs, acknowledging the church’s significant community contributions. Council members referred to Christ the Rock as “the church that helps,” highlighting its active involvement in addressing local needs.

Christ the Rock Church’s initiatives have strengthened relationships with city leadership and fostered a positive perception within the community. By providing essential services and support, the church exemplifies its dedication to serving others and making a meaningful impact in Fall River.
