Politics and faith: Why many are leaving Evangelical churches

A gay ex-pastor conducted a survey investigating why people leave Christianity. The findings revealed politics as a leading factor, particularly conservative ideologies tied to evangelicalism. Respondents cited Donald Trump’s election and his alignment with evangelical leaders as pivotal in their decision to exit the faith. References to “Trump” appeared 81 times in survey responses, highlighting the former president as a tipping point.

Trumpism as a “Final Straw”

The survey spotlighted Trump as a symbol of the political and cultural shift driving believers away. Respondents described personal disillusionment with evangelicals’ endorsement of Trump’s rhetoric and policies. Some noted clashes with family over divisive issues like Confederate symbolism and nationalism. Others expressed frustration with evangelical support for Trump, which they felt contradicted Christian values like love and compassion.

One respondent said, “Trump was the last straw for me… seeing evangelicals support racism, sexism, and greed under the guise of faith.” For many, this perceived hypocrisy undermined their connection to the church.

Evangelicals Face Declining Numbers

Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) data highlights the shrinking evangelical demographic. In 2006, white evangelicals comprised 23% of the U.S. population, significantly outpacing white mainline Protestants at 17.8%. By 2023, the gap had narrowed to just over one percentage point, with evangelical numbers continuing to decline. While non-white evangelicals offset some losses, the overall trend remains downward.

Implications for the Future

With Trump now re-elected for another term, researchers and critics anticipate an accelerated decline in evangelical church membership. Supporters of Trump argue his policies reflect Christian values, while detractors view the alignment as damaging to the faith’s broader appeal. This rift continues to shape the American religious landscape.
